A Fun Day Out at Camp Norse 10/19/13
|
|
We'll be heading back to Camp Norse for another great package of events! Yes, come & enjoy any of the day's activities, which include the Council's Covered Wagon event, our "Intro to the Great Outdoors", the October Pack Meeting and a Pack Sleepover.
We are calling it “A Day of Fun at Camp Norse”, and it is really four events in one!
· Covered Wagon Derby: 9am-2:30pm
· Introduction to the Great Outdoors: ~2:30pm to 7pm
· PACK MEETING: 7pm -8:30pm
· Pack Overnighter: after the pack meeting till 9am Sunday morning
Please feel free to attend any or all of these events. Siblings may attend the events, but we must know ahead of time. You may register with your den leader, or use the new registration form on the pack’s website (www.pack13.org) and following the link under the “events” tab.
All participants (Scouts, parents and siblings) must have completed part A and B of the medical form (does not require a doctor’s signature) and have it in their possession (or you must have previously turned it in to your den leader). You may download the form from the pack website (www.pack13.org) by navigating to the “Documents” page (on the tab at the top of the screen) & downloading the “Medical Form.pdf) file. We will have a very limited number of forms on-hand with us at the event, so please be sure to fill one out.
RAIN or SHINE!
We have requested 70 degrees and clear skies, but, sometimes, our requests are granted late… ;-) The Covered Wagon portion of the event is under Council control, so we will keep you posted on any developments, should they choose to cancel. The Pack events will only be cancelled in the event of severe weather. (Remember, that the boys don’t care about the weather, as long as they have the right protective clothing).
Covered Wagon Derby (9am -2:30pm)
Cost = $6
This is a great event, where Scouts work as a team, transporting a real Pack 13 Covered Wagon around the Camp to “Towns”. At each town, they will work on games/activities that teach skills & teamwork. Towns in the past have included “Cheese Moose”, Short Wave radio , Camp Yell, Obstacle Course, etc.
Participants receive a temporary badge (or totem) that they can wear on the right pocket of their uniforms. The scouts get beads for each task they complete, which can be attached to the temporary badge. You can use the badge year-after-year, too. In fact, you get extra beads for doing just that!
You may either bring a bagged lunch, or purchase lunch from the Order of the Arrow at a nominal charge. Note: we usually recommend packing lunches, as the line can get quite long.
Scouts dress in western wear. If no western wear, regular clothes are fine. Uniforms are NOT needed. Please remember that it often gets damp, chilly, and muddy in the woods. Please dress accordingly, as this event is entirely outdoors.
More info available at www.annawon.com. Click on upcoming events, and select the “Covered Wagon” link on the right side of the page.
Introduction to the Great Outdoors (~2:30pm to 7pm)
After the Covered Wagon Event, we’ll be doing a activity, where scouts can learn the basics of staying/playing in the outdoors . Scouts use these skills, the closer they get to Boy Scouts. As cubs, they will camp 2-3 times a year. In Boy Scouts, the Troop will camp once a month.
We will going over:
· fire building/safety
· tent design/setup
· What gear is needed for a Cub Scout overnighter
· Hikes
· Cooking skills: Scouts (parents & siblings) get to prepare & cook their own dinners over an open flame!
We are asking for $5 from each participant to help defray the cost of the food.
PACK MEETING (7pm -8:30pm)
Our October Pack meeting will be held around a campfire this month! Dens will put on a great show of songs, skits and stunts. We will be having a (camera-friendly) knighting of all new Bobcats. The theme for this pack meeting is “a Wild West Pack Meeting”. Go Clint Eastwood on us! Let’s see some costumes and some whoopin’ it up! J
Note: The pack meeting will be held at the Leif Cabin campsite this year.
Pack Overnighter (after the pack meeting till 9am Sunday morning)
The Pack Overnighter is a great way to get some “outdoor time” with your scout. If you have never been camping before, this is the time to do it. Right after we clean up from Covered wagon, we’ll mosey on over to a campsite somewhere in Camp Norse.
We’ll have reserved a cabin, so those of you without camping gear can get a decent night’s sleep on a cot. Cabin space is limited, so please try to bring a tent if you do have one. Priority sleeping arrangements in the cabin will be given to the younger scouts, as they are the least likely to have camping gear.
The campsite features a cabin, plenty of places for tents and a campfire ring. The cabin has built-in bunks, suitable for sleeping bags, and does have wood-fired heat, should it get cold. Plumbing facilities (separate male & female) are nearby, and feature flushing apparatuses and running water. J Abundant nature and furry woodland creature experiences are provided, as well.
We will be cooking up breakfast in the morning, before we head out in time for Sunday morning services. We are asking for $5 per person staying overnight to help defray the cost of food (note: if you pay for the “Intro. to the Outdoors”, this one comes along for free).
As always, BSA Youth Protection standards are in effect during the campout.
Directions From Mansfield
Route 495 South to Exit 6, Route 44 E, through Middleboro rotary. Stay on Route 44, exit at Spring Street exit, heading towards Carver. At end, turn left onto High Street. Follow one mile, (High Street becomes Parting Ways Road). Camp Norse entrance is on the right.

· Covered Wagon = $6 per Scout
· Intro to the Great Outdoors = $5 per person (to cover meal)
· Pack Meeting = Free
· Sleepover = $5 per person (to cover meal)
o if you have already paid for the Intro to the Great Outdoors, there is no additional charge.
General Tips:
· It will be quite cold, so be sure to bundle up. You will be outside for a long time, and you will feel cooler than you would at home. Please dress in layers. A wind break layer is highly suggested. Hats and gloves as recommended.
· There is not supposed to be rain during the events, but in a “Be Prepared” way, I would suggest bringing a waterproof outer layer.
· Be sure to have a flashlight or headlamp per person, as it will be necessary around the camp. You will also want to bring a folding chair or some other kind of seat for around the fire.
· If you have them, boots would be best to wear. If not, try to stay away from white or lightly colored sneakers as it may be muddy. Bringing an extra pair of footwear might be a good idea, especially if you are attending more than the pack meeting.
· Uniforms are optional...everyone will probably be bundled up so they may not be visible. Scout Hats might be nice, if you are not dressing the part for the “a Wild West Pack Meeting” theme. If you are going to the Covered Wagon, be sure to "Cowboy Up
· The Buddy system will be enforced at all times! We do not want any lost Scouts (or parents), so make sure everyone has a buddy. Feel free to remind any Scout you see without one.
· There will be an area near the Pack meeting location, where those who are sleeping over may have pitched their tents. Please be courteous, and stay out of that area.
· Please be considerate of the Camp Site. If you see trash, pick it up. We want to leave no trace that we were ever there.
